ELISA
Prologue :
Final Days
When Elisa Lam touched down in LA on 29th of January 2013, she had no idea that her days were numbered. That a dingy hotel with a wrecked and dubious reputation would be her final resting place on earth. That the news of her death, which came a few weeks later, would spread like wildfire across the internet, rousing intense discussions and speculations, and baffling the authorities in charge of investigating her demise.
Yes. People die everyday on this planet. They die of illnesses, of accidents, of being victims to others, and, for the truly fortunate few, of natural causes.
And then, there are those who perished under the most unusual circumstances, of causes unknown and reasons unclear. People who's deaths are discussed, deliberated, argued, speculated, in manners that inevitably turn them into the stuff of urban legends.
And the death of Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old young woman at that time, falls squarely into this category. A tragedy that raises more questions as the day passes. What happened? Who, or what killed her? Did she committed suicide? And why?
It's been a little more than a year since her body was found, and her case was filed under the 'Accidental Death' category, but it would be a lie to say that the case has a satisfying conclusion. There are still unanswered questions. Curious queries. Loose ends. Doubts and theories abound.
But I guess the biggest question that is on most people's mind, and the most puzzling piece of the mystery, is this:
What was it that she saw when she stepped out of the elevator?
